In surfing, “hang” means putting ten toes over the nose in the supreme act of finely honed edgework, the Hang Ten. To hang ten means to hang your hide out in full screaming trim down-the-line commitment with no leash and no net. It’s a tightrope jig over the abyss—dancing stylishly on the edge of disaster.
Ira Opper’s latest film release “Hang” is an investigation into the elite of modern day longboarding. “Hang” is a two-year, round-the-globe expedition that pays homage to six modern meccas of state-of-the-art longboarding.
Shot on location in Hawaii, Samoa, Australia, Indonesia, Costa Rica and California, “Hang” offers exciting new footage and on-the-beach interviews with over thirty longboard masters of all ages who attempt explain why the world is divided between those who can hang and those who can’t.
Surfers profiled include Bonga Perkins, Dino Miranda, Belinda Baggs, John Peck, Robert August, Andrew Logreco, Beau Young, Joel Tudor and more. There is an in-depth chapter featuring today’s new breed in Samoa and a classic legends trip to the exotic Mentawai Islands with Melvin Pu’u, Titus Kinimaka, Dave Kalama and Jeff Hakman. “Hang” journeys to the sacred waves of Hawaii, Australia and California.
