"WORDZ" SURF MOVIE PREMIERE RAISES $$ TO SAVE CARDIFF REEF
SOLANA BEACH, Calif. – “Wordz,” the latest surf movie by Opper Sports Productions, received a big “thumbs up” by the crème of the surfing community during its gala premiere in La Jolla on April 22.
Pipeline Master Rob Machado hosted the evening’s festivities, which included an all-star auction with such items as the personal surfboards of longboard world champions Joel Tudor and Colin McPhillips (Colin’s board donated by Bill Stewart), and surfing legend Donald Takayama. The premiere raised $7,000 for the Surfrider Foundation’s opposition to a sea wall planned at Cardiff Reef, one of San Diego’s most popular surf spots.
"The movie premier couldn't have gone better,” said Marco Gonzalez, chairman of the San Diego Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation. “We had surfing legends, world champions, established professionals, shapers, photographers, and environmental activists – all coming together for a common cause- protecting our coastal resources. It's always encouraging when the greater surfing industry gets together and recognizes the need for coastal protection. Cardiff Reef is a world-class wave, and Opper Sports makes world-class movies. Using one to protect the other was a great idea."
“I’ve been surfing Cardiff Reef since I was seven,” adds former longboard world champion Joel Tudor, “and I saw El Niño, the big surf of ’83-’84… Cardiff’s been through a lot of changes, and it doesn’t need to change any more. The seawall will create so much backwash it will never be the same, and Cardiff is one of the most surfed spots in San Diego, it breaks almost every day all year round. It’s ludicrous to ruin a surf spot that gives everybody so much happiness. You cannot put cement where the ocean is meant to be.”
